Ask friends that have gotten married. If your friend’s loved their vendors, they are going to tell you. If your friends did not like their vendors, they are going to tell you. Referrals are a great place to start.
Bridal forums. I have said this several times before, but bridal forums are a great way to find a wealth of information from vendors to DIY projects

Attend a wedding show
For the prospective bride, this event offers the opportunity to meet most local and sometimes non-local vendors all in one location. Attending may mean that the bride can consider all the things that go into a wedding in one day of shopping. She may go with family planning the wedding or with bridesmaids, as it can offer an entertaining as well as an instructive day.
Once you've hired some vendors, ask them for their professional recommendations. After all, these are the best people to ask seeing as they are in the wedding business and they have worked with several other wedding vendors before.
Meet with the vendor in person
Once you have identified a few vendors be sure to meet with them in person to decide whether their professionalism and personalities match your own. You will be working with them a lot so it's best to work with someone you like. [I tell my brides to make sure they like me… I may have to help them pee in that big dress!]

No matter who you hire, make sure you have a fully executed contract. Make sure the contract includes a detailed list of the services provided and any payment schedule. Be sure to check payment due dates and cancellation policies (heaven forbid you need it)! Remember choosing the right wedding vendor is an art and a science. It takes time and research. Do not get bullied into signing a contract. The right vendor will be able to work within your budget and be accommodating to your needs. It not, they may not be the vendor for you. Keep looking.
